Whaling was important from the 1820’s until the early 1900’s. The Antarctic waters were the most abundant. Yet in a hundred years time stocks were almost extinct.
Sailors were at sea for 2-3 years before returning home. Remote islands in the Pacific were essential for restocking provisions.
